The governments of Thailand and Japan have recently announced that they will be collaborating on an exciting new high-speed rail project. The ambitious undertaking is set to have 12 stations, each strategically placed along the route to facilitate efficient travel. These stations include Bang Sue, Don Mueang, Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Nakhon Sawan, Phichit, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Sri Satchanalai, Lampang, Lamphun including Chiang Mai, and  will span a total distance of 688 kilometers.

The second phase of the project will continue from Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai, covering a further distance of 288km. A feasibility study for the project was conducted by a range of organizations, including the Department of Rail Transport, Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning, Public Health Management Office, Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council, and the State Railway of Thailand. Representatives from Japanese agencies, including staff from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport including Tourism, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japanese embassy, were also present during the study

The feasibility study was reviewed twice, with the second review conducted on December 14, before the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed with Japan on May 27, 2015, in Tokyo. The Japanese proposed using Shinkansen-style trains, which are capable of reaching maximum speeds of 300kph, for the project. The high-speed rail project is expected to offer significant economic benefits, with a study conducted by Japanese agencies indicating that the first phase of the project would offer an economic return 17.3% higher than its original target.
