Thon Buri was formerly known as Ratcha Khruet District, and it was later renamed Bang Yi Ruea District, which was under the Thon Buri administrative area. Then, Thon Buri and Phra Nahon merged their administrative areas and replaced them with Bangkok Thon Buri, which was previously Bangkok's capital city. Furthermore, in order to honor King Thon Buri (King Taksin the Great), the word "Thon Buri'' was retained. Its status also has changed over time to Thon Buri District under Bangkok's current administrative area, and there are a total of 7 sub-districts as follows: Wat Kanlaya, Hiranruchi, Bang Yi Ruea, Bukkhalo, Talat Phlu, Dao Khanong, and Samre. There are also many districts neighboring Thon Buri as the north connects to Bangkok Yai and the south to Rat Burana. The east neighbors with Khlong San, while the west connects to Phasi Charoen and Chom Thong. Because Thon Buri was once as important as the historical capital city's home, it has been designated as a conservation area alongside the ancient city. It is also surrounded by important ancient historical architecture and cultural values hidden among the city's skyscrapers, such as King Taksin the Great Statue, Wat Intharam Worawiharn, Wat Kanlayanamit Woramahawihan, Santa Cruz Church, Kudi Chin Community, and others. Moreover, with its ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity, Thon Burin attracts a large number of Thai and foreign visitors who visit continually.
