Kathu Subdistrict, formerly known as Nai Tu or Lai Thu, a traditional community, has been located in Kathu area for a long time. In the past, Kathu's economy was based on tin mining and agriculture. However, according to the Ministry of Interior's announcement, the status of Kathu Subdistrict has been changed to Municipality since 2008.
Kathu is approximately 9 kilometers from Phuket Town and is surrounded by mountains. There are many interesting tourist attractions, including nature and culture. At the moment, Kathu is a small community where the local people have preserved their traditions and culture with support from the Municipality. Kathu Municipality has 19 communities with local residents, tourists, and foreigners living together. The area has complete facilities to support long-term living, making Kathu one of the most livable areas on Phuket Island.
Kathu is a perfect area not far from Phuket Town and has complete amenities such as hospitals, restaurants, shopping malls, and Patong Beach, making it an ideal location for living, a popular area for long-term residents of Phuket. It is another location that buyers and investors are interested in and invest in a real estate property.
Furthermore, Kathu is a charming community and has retained the traditional cultures, and it is located in a good location, convenient transportation, easy access to any areas of Phuket. Nowadays, Kathu Subdistrict Municipality Office supports all types of tourism activities to attract tourists and generate revenue for the community because Kathu is a culturally rich city and an excellent place for people to experience their traditional way of life.
Furthermore, Kathu includes 19 communities and is located close to amenities, indicating that this area is suited for living. Many foreigners and people from other provinces who come to work in Phuket choose to live in this area, primarily to work in the tourism sector, such as hotel employees, golf club staff, company employees, merchants, government officials, etc.
Kathu is located halfway between Phuket Town and Patong Beach, with complete facilities such as Banmaireab School (Tantikowitbamrung), Kajonkietsuksa School, Red Mountain Golf Club Phuket, Phuket Country Club golf course (Phase 1), and Bang Wad Dam, etc.
As for transportation, traveling within Kathu is very comfortable. It is only 9 kilometers away from Phuket Town and can be reached via Wichit Songkhram Road or Phra Phuket Kaew Road from Phuket Town and via Phrabaramee Road, which is connected from Patong. In addition, there is a public transportation service that runs through the Kathu as follows:
Phuket local bus: There is the main station in Phuket Town Central Market (Phuket Downtown). Therefore, the tourists can take the Phuket Town-Kathu local bus line or Phuket Town-Patong local bus line. The bus departs roughly every 15-20 minutes or before if the bus is full before that time.
Phuket Airport Bus Express: The tourists can travel from Phuket International Airport into the Kathu area near Kathu Intersection (See Kor Intersection).
