The 6 million baht tunnel project of Kathu Patong has been in the works for a number of years, during which time the concepts have changed several times, understandably so as drilling into a mountain is no easy undertaking. The final project will see two separate tunnels for traffic both in and out of Patong and Kathu. Tunnels in each direction will feature a separate lane for automobiles and a dedicated lane for the slower moving motorbikes.
The Transit Infrastructure in Phuket differs in many ways than some of the more developed cities like Bangkok due the terrain and historical events. A proposed Light Rail system will depart from the Ta Nun and span Ao Phang Nga, or Phang Nga Bay, connecting Phuket to the Mainland with its first mass transit system. Once in Phuket the line will move toward HKT, Phuket International Airport, and continue south through Phuket Town to Saphan Hin, before passing Chao Fa East Road to complete the loop in Chalong.
With roughly 22 stops along the 60 kilometer route, this rail will surely be a big hit in Phuket, as anyone who has ever traveled to and from the Airport knows it is a bit of a hassle to travel by Taxi at 1000 baht (unless you learn to negotiate). Two flyovers aimed at reducing the congested airport traffic are slated for the near future. One flyover is set to link the Koh Kaew U turn and the airport road T-junction with Thepkasattri Road. The other will be located near the Mu Dok Khao Intersection on Thepkrasattri Road in Mai Khao, where a majority of the traffic exits towards Phuket International Airport causing a bottleneck.
